When I was growing up...
Family holidays in the 80’s and 90’s were a huge event that happened twice a year if we were lucky. There was the cold Easter caravan break; with chocolate eggs we proudly displayed on the shelf and cold noses in the morning waiting for our dad to light the gas fire.
Then, there was our 2 week summer trip to Cornwall! This was the one to get really excited about. Anticipating the long overnight journey down the M5 (with treats at the end of it) as we sat watching the sunrise, the rustle of the tent being prepared and then we got a caravan!
Our mum would carefully pack clothes and food for the best 2 weeks visiting different beaches, arguing of course if we got too hot on walks, but always running into the sea over and over again and floating around, at Gorran Haven, on a large rubber ring. We were clueless about time and had not a worry in the world... just a deep tan, salty hair and the joy of purchasing our daily ice cream in a place where time seemed to stand still.
Then we took our children to Cornwall...
Our children began their Cornish journey 13 years ago on a rainy day in May (aged 2 and 6 months) with my husband and I married only the day before! For our honeymoon, we had decided on a self catering cottage in Looe.
Later that summer, we found ourselves driving along the Gorran high roads, down Chute lane and stayed at a cottage with the most glorious view of my favourite childhood place. It was here that my family's love of Gorran Haven began.
Along came Toddy...
Holidays remained a once or twice yearly event and with my husband busy building up his company, our Gorran Haven holidays were once again happily spent with my parents. After many stays in various lovely little cottages around the village and the frequency of visits increasing, we had an idea of buying our very own cottage - both for us and to make into a cosy escape for others.
Then one dark January day, an email made my phone ping and there it was Toddy Cottage for sale. Once the sale was complete we bundled our children (now increased to three!) into the car and set off to collect the keys, not telling the children that this time this was our forever cottage.
Then came The View...
In 2017, during a rainy day we set off to explore some parts of Cornwall we didn’t know so well. I’d heard of Perranporth and directed my husband to head there. As we pulled up in the car park, the rain was pouring but with the promise of the pub on the beach, I persuaded my husband to run towards the glimmer of light we could see. Inside the warm and welcoming Watering Hole, we sipped our drinks looking at the waves crashing and fell in love with this perfect place.
Back home, my husband (addicted to Right Move) showed me a newly built house on Ramoth Way. A house that whilst being modern and large seemed to have character, and well, a simply amazing view! During another stay at Toddy, we made our way there to view the house and meet the developers, and soon found ourselves outside our next seaside home; The View, a large, beautiful place for our family and to rent out to other lovers of Cornwall.
Today...
Our journeys down the M5 may have become more frequent, but every time the excitement and anticipation remains the same.
We wish to welcome you into these lovely homes and to our website where we intend to provide more information, informal images and tips on travelling around Cornwall... a passion for my family - and something we hope you'll share with us!
You can book our sea side homes through carefully selected local agents and these details are found on the page for each house or by clicking the BOOK buttons across the site. As we don’t actually live in Cornwall, we felt that it was important to have trusted local people on hand to manage your holiday and be there if needed. However, I can also be reached anytime to answer questions and help you plan your perfect Cornish break.
You can also find both our properties on instagram; browse through some photos of the local area, see what some of our guests have been up to and keep an eye out for last minute bookings!
